Like everyone else, I've been following the tragic news stories to come out of Oklahoma after Monday's storms. The devastation is unimaginable. There's not much good that can come out of an F5 tornado that's over a mile wide and stays on the ground for over 20 minutes.
Yet among the tragic news coverage are a few things that make you feel a little better. We all went to bed Monday night with the story that there were already 51 fatalities and the Medical Examiner's office was expecting that total to rise to at least 90. On Tuesday, that office announced that the fatality count was wrong..,and when I checked this morning, the number of confirmed fatalities stood at 24. Sadly, that number includes 9 children. But when you consider that 2 schools directly in the path of the tornado were completely destroyed, I can only conclude that people were as prepared for this as they could have possibly have been.
Scattered among the tragic news stories are stories that make you stand in awe of the human spirit. Stories of unlikely heroes that put their lives on the line to save others. Stories of patience and perseverance when normal contact with the outside world was cut off.
And then there's this truly unique story. While doing an interview on live TV, this storm survivor finds her lost dog, still buried in the rubble.
The storms that hit Oklahoma Monday night are the same storms that rolled through the Mid South overnight Tuesday. We are blessed in many ways. We're truly fortunate that the storms had weakened by the time they arrived here.
If you're feeling fortunate and blessed, why not take a moment to send some help to those less fortunate. The American Red Cross is on the ground and providing disaster relief now to the thousands affected by the Oklahoma storms. You can donate $10 to the Disaster Relief Fund by texting REDCROSS to 90999. THe charge will appear on your phone bill.
