You Are The Music...We're Just The Band
On a summer afternoon in the early 70's, perhaps the most underrated metal band of the 70's played a concert at the Overton Park Shell (now known as the Levitt Shell.) They were on a double-bill with the Marshall Tucker Band.
I was a little too young to be going to concerts then, but for decades now, I've heard just how much that show ROCKED.
There was plenty of talent on stage that day. Mel Galley would go on to join Whitesnake. Glenn Hughes would join the lineup of Deep Purple and actually served as a front man for Black Sabbath for a short time in the mid 80's. And Dave Holland would become the drummer for Judas Priest.
For one magical afternoon in the summer of '73, all three of them were on stage for an outdoor show that people are still talking about to this day.
This photo taken from the stage that day served as the album cover for their album "You Are The Music...We're Just The Band"
Today's edition of Amnesia Theater at 8:45 features a song from that album: "Coast to Coast". I don't think it's been played on radio for decades.
Those of you that know Glen Hughes from Deep Purple will recognize his lead vocals in this song. It's an amazing performance with a laid back, easygoing feel that's hard to find these days. In spite of its eary 70's orgins, I think it stacks up favorably next to any power balad out there.
And just in case you missed today's Amnesia Theater at 8:45, I found a copy of the song on YouTube. Enjoy it while you can. :-)
