I get the best smoke breaks in the business. I really do. I mean once I get past the long walk and 4 minutes round trip spent on the elevator, the smoking area itself is quite tranquil. It overlooks a beautiful landscaped lake area in the back of our office building.
About 3 weeks ago, some of us noticed that a duck had set up nesting in a bush right outside of our building. So she sort of became a "pet" to us. Thursday, as the weather warmed up a little, we noticed that the eggs had hatched...and Mama Duck was walking her new ducklings around the lake for the first time.
(I've really got to update my ancient flip phone. The camera sucks!)
So just in time for Easter Weekend, we had some 'peeps" of our own. This picture really doesn't convey just how CUTE they were.
After a walk around the lake and some "swimming lessons", the mother duck and her babies made their way back across the lake, to where a gathering of folks from the office were busily snapping pictures. This was their "Red Carpet" moment.
It's amazing how instinctive animals are. The whole time the ducks were swimming across the lake, Mama Duck was checking for danger underwater. And for good reason. Some of the massive turtles that inhabit the lake have been known to pull baby ducks right under the water, never to be seen again.
I'm happy to say that the ducks appear to be safe from that fate. After posing for the Paparazzi of office workers, the Mama Duck was last seen with babies in tow ccrossing Thousand Oaks Blvd. in the direction of the Mariott. My guess is that they were heading for open water. Nonconnah creek isn't far away.
